Ever fall in love with an area rug, and without knowing exactly what size you need, can envision it fitting perfectly in your bedroom or living room? Many of us think we know the size rug we need just by looking at it. But, trust us. . . your best bet is to measure before you buy!

Buying without measuring tends to lead to underestimating the size of the rug you need and too often people purchase a rug that is simply too small. The best thing you can do before buying an area rug is to measure the size of the space, and know exactly how much of the floor you want covered, as well as know which pieces of furniture you want placed on the rug. These tips, along with your accurate measurements, should help you in choosing the rug that’s best for your space:

Living Rooms

Larger living rooms: For larger living rooms you can float furniture in the center of the room. It’s important that the furniture doesn’t feel squished on the rug, so make sure there is breathing room around all the edges.

Medium-Sized living rooms: For medium-sized living rooms you can place the furniture against the walls, putting a rug in the center with the front legs of the furniture on the rug and the back legs on the floor.

Smaller living rooms: For smaller, more compact living rooms you can place a rug in front of the furniture, filling the space created in the middle by the furniture. Here it shows putting the coffee table on the rug.

Bedrooms

Larger bedrooms: For large bedrooms, one approach is to have a rug that covers most of the floor space – one that can accommodate having all furniture on it. An alternate approach for large bedrooms is to have the rug stop right before the night tables.

Smaller bedrooms: For small bedrooms, or if you have a smaller rug you’d like to use, try placing it under the middle of the bed so that it comes out from under the end and the sides of the bed for few feet.

Dining Rooms

When it comes to putting a rug in your dining room, make sure the rug is not too small for the room or for the entire dining table and chairs. Each chair should be able to be pulled out from under the table and still be comfortably on the rug. When chairs are tucked in there should be ample carpet around the chairs.

Hallways

In hallways, area rugs should be centered if there is furniture on both sides of the hall, or pushed to one side if there is furniture only on one side of the wall. In both cases, the furniture should not be on the rug.
